HOMOEOPATHIC INTERVENTION IN THE MANAGEMENT OF COVID 19

Miasmatic understanding of COVID 19:

The founder of Homeopathy Dr Hahnemann has generalized all epidemic diseases under psora, epidemics being infectious, acute and either self limiting or terminating.

Symptomatically we understand the evolution of miasm from Psora ( inflammation) to sycosis ( mucous secretions) to Syphilis ( disintegration of blood cells and benumbing of nerves)

Thus it is a multimiasmatic disease, which MIGHT require multilevel antimiasmatic remedies as advised by Dr Hahnemann in his The Chronic diseases.

Homoeopathy has  a great history of treating pandemics, viz influenza, plague etc.

Our Master Dr Hahnemann has given us guidelines about treating an epidemic in his Organon of Medicine.

As per 6tth Edition of Organon of Medicine Dr Hahnemann says,

Aph 100: how to deal with epidemic and sporadic diseases and arrive at the totality of symptoms by studying Pure picture of every prevailing diseases,

investing it thoroughly and

examining it in all phases.

Aph 101: close observation of several such cases to become conversant with the totality of its signs & symptoms and can find suitable remedy for it.

Aph 102:  include more peculiarities of this collective disease and general symptoms.

Thus to arrive at a Genus epidemicus for COVID 19, one need to study many numbers of cases from different geographical situations.

In his works on The Chronic diseases volume 1, page 134, Dr Hahnemann writes, the epidemic diseases if they do not terminate soon and pass directly over into good health, (even when the acute specific was rightly given) often need an antipsoric assistance, which I have usually found in Sulphur.

Considering these guidelines,In my opinion, Homeopathic intervention in management of COVID 19 should be at three levels:

1.) As prophylaxis

2.) Acute intervention therapeutically.

3.) During convalescence.

1.) As prophylaxis against COVID 19:

Arsenic alb 30: 

Arsenic album in lower succussions is proven to have efficacy against inflammatory processes at cellular level.

The main sphere of action of arsenic album is on respiratory system, gastrointestinal system, kidneys.

It causes destructive inflammation and effusion of mucous membranes and serous membranes there by increasing secretions at cellular levels. Thus it produces increased discharges from all the orifices. It also produces destruction of blood cells and Thus marking its use in hypoxia that is seen in COVID 19.

 The characteristics are offensive discharges, weakness, anxiety about health, fear of death+3, insecurity about future; which are all marked symptoms of all the people all over the World. 

As a preventive measure we can give Arsenic album 30 potency. 

Recently it is observed by Gujrat & Kerala Government that those contacts who were given Arsenic album 30 potency did not turn positive for COVID 19 after 14 days of quarantine.

2.) Acute drugs during treatment of COVID 19:

Drugs of my choice during the treatment of COVID 19 would be Arsenic album, Antim tart, Antimars, Bryonia, Lobelia, Camphora, Carbo veg, Zincum met.

I am intentionally selecting these drugs as at different stage of the disease an individual would need different remedy. I don’t claim the use of genus epidemicus while treating the pandemic as the symptomatology and severity differs as per the individual’s immunity and reaction pattern.

a.) Arsenic album as described above.

b.) Bryonia alba: Bryonia acts on serous membranes especially of lungs to produce effusion. The symptoms are short. quick oppressed breathing with heat and pain in chest. It usually affects the lower lobes of lungs.

Bryonia causes nasal catarrh that is dry and cough that has little expectoration often causing retching and pain in walls of chest. Then it progresses to pneumonia.  We notice frequent thirst for large quantities of water and bryonia is needed when we have complaints during hot days and cold night, just like the weather these days.

Bryonia also seems to prove effective during delirious stage where patient has disorientation of space.

c.) Antim tart: It produces catarrhal inflammation of mucous membranes causing   irregularities of respiration. It can be used therapeutically in patients of emphysema ( Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) where the lung function is already compromised. There is large collection of mucous which is expectorated with great difficulty. Antim tart helps in expulsion of mucous when there is hepatization of lungs in pneumonia. The patient must sit up and breath some fresh air. 

d.)Camphora: Camphoraacts on the pneumogastric nerve causing suffocative catarrh with paralysis of the lungs, with coryza, nasal defluxion. It causes involuntary diarrhoea with great prostration and coldness of skin.Camphora was successfully used in epidemic influenza.

e.) Lobelia: Dyspnoea: from constriction of middle of chest; worse with every labor pain, seems to neutralize the pains; worse by exposure to cold or slightest exertion, going up or down stairs . There is sensation of congestion, pressure or weight in chest as if blood from extremities was filling it, better  BY RAPID WALKING. Sensation as if heart would stand still; deep seated pain at base.

f.)Zincum met: Burning pressure beneath sternum. Constriction and cutting in chest. Hoarseness. Debilitating, spasmodic cough; worse, eating sweet things. Child grasps genitals during cough. Asthmatic bronchitis, with constriction, of chest. Dyspnœa better as soon as expectoration appears.

3.) During convalescence:

As recommended by Dr Hahnemann in his The Chronic diseases, after the acute episode of the epidemic is over I would use a dose of Sulphur 200, followed by administration of constitutional remedy repeatedly to aid the recovery of immunity and bodily functioning.

General precautions to prevent the outbreak:

1. Create awareness about mode of transmission.

2. Educate about cough hygiene( covering nose and mouth while coughing), hand washing etiquettes.

3. Covering mouth and nose.

4. Avoid close contact with everyone.

This is my perspective about Homeopathic  Intervention in management of COVID 19 outbreak.

I sincerely hope to heal the World with homeopathy with effective homeopathic treatment.
